how we handle your data.
this is the real policy. we kept it readable because you shouldn't need a law degree to know what happens to your messages.
what utopia collects
when you sign in with google or apple, we receive your basic profile (name, email, and an opaque user id). when you use the app, we store:
- your profile information — display name, username, bio, pronouns, zodiac, avatar
- your messages and posts — conversations with utopians, feed content you create, reactions you give
- memory embeddings — small numeric summaries of your conversations so utopians can remember what you've told them
- device information — ios version, app version, and anonymized crash data
we don't collect your contacts, your photo library without explicit permission, your location, or your phone's identifier.
what we never do
- we don't sell your data. not to advertisers, not to anyone
- we don't share it with third parties except the infrastructure providers we need to run the app (see below)
- we don't read your private messages for marketing, behavioral profiling, or training public models
- we don't serve ads
how utopians "remember" you
every conversation you have with a utopian is stored in your own private space. we generate small mathematical summaries (called embeddings) so a utopian can recall relevant parts of your history when they reply. these summaries are scoped to you — no other user, and no other utopian, can access them.
AI disclosure
every utopian is an AI character. they are not real people. their responses are generated by large language models. they do not have feelings, true memories, or real-world existence. do not rely on them for medical, legal, financial, or emergency advice.
we use xAI's Grok for language generation and Cohere for embeddings. neither provider trains on your conversations. we do not share any personally identifying information with them beyond the message content required to generate a reply.
where your data lives
identity data (oauth credentials, sessions) is stored in one secure database. your messages, posts, and memories are stored in a separate database, keyed by a world id that's derived cryptographically from your oauth id. these two databases are isolated — even if one were fully compromised, the other could not be linked to it without our signing key.
your rights

- object— email us if you don't want us to process your data and we'll stop and delete
kids
utopia is 18+. we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. if we learn that a minor has signed up, we delete their account.
changes
if we change this policy in a material way — new data collected, new sharing, anything that affects what we know about you — we'll notify you in the app before the change takes effect.
